This year's edition of the European Disabled Youth Games Emil Open kicked off on Wednesday 22 June 2022 in Brno. The opening ceremony at the Pod Palackého vrchem stadium and the traditional parade of drummers through the city centre were not missing. On behalf of the South Moravian Region, the participants were greeted by the Governor Jan Grolich.

Brno hosts the European Disabled Youth Games Emil Open. The event is open to all young athletes with different types of disabilities. The guest speaker will be Vojtěch Kocůrek, Vice President of the Organizing Committee, who will not only introduce the Games themselves and the venues where they are held, but also remind how the whole event helps disabled talents, as well as the important role of volunteers.

The young athlete started pedalling with her parents, went on countless bike trips with them, and climbed Sněžka together. She fell in love with riding a monoski. With her admirable diligence, the successful young athlete, who has already won a bronze medal at an international competition, inspires not only her peers, but also adults. Her quadriparesis, epilepsy, severe visual and speech impairment do not prevent her from bravely fighting life or sport.

The Emil Open - European Disabled Youth Games is an international sports and social event for young people with all types of disabilities aged 10-26. With the expected number of participants, the international concept and the range of sports activities, accompanying and cultural programme, they represent a unique event of European format.

Among the ambassadors will be Adam Peška, who won the most valuable metal at the 2021 Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo. "The Emil Foundation has helped me a lot in the past, thanks to it I was able to buy new balls and a ramp. I also competed at the Emil Open in Brno before, I liked it a lot and I like to remember it," says Peska.

If someone didn't know this smiling blonde warrior personally, they would probably think she was a perfectly healthy teenage girl who doesn't like boredom, based on the list of her activities. But Anička Jurošková from Ostrava, who will soon celebrate her thirteenth birthday, is in a completely different league. 

This year the Games were marked by a sad event. After a two-year pandemic and last year's tornado, it is also dealing with the aftermath of the worst. Before the war broke out, 46 Ukrainian participants signed up for the Emil Open. Nearly thirty of them managed to be brought to Brno immediately after the outbreak of the conflict, while the others have only now contacted us from various parts of Europe with a wish to participate in the Games. A week-long camp is being prepared for them.

Dozens of medals have been won by children at the European Youth Games for the Disabled Emil Open. More than 500 young athletes from 17 European countries have measured their strength in athletics, swimming and table tennis.

Thanks to a grant from the City of Brno, Emil Open will be held in Brno again this year. Competitors in the eighth year of this exceptional project will be able to compete in more than 10 sports in different categories.

Hundreds of young people from all over the continent will come to Brno this summer to win a medal at Emil Open 2019.   Brno again becomes the host city and the main partner of the races, which will take place from 12 to 16 June.

Performances to the limit of what is possible, a lot of emotions, new friendships - that was the last week in Brno. That was the European Youth Games for the Disabled Emil Open.

It was amazing to see the youngsters with a disability compete, feel joy from their victory, face a loss, simply live life fully.

Our organisation was represented by five volunteers – Michaela Kadlecová, Rudolf Štarha, Jiří Mesároš, Daniela Hanzlíková a Brigita Stejskalová, who helped at the sporting venues in various areas. We thank all the above-mentioned employees for our representation.

„ We all are winners ,“ resonated at the athletics stadium Pod Palackého vrchem during the Closing Ceremony of a unique sporting event.

The players did not take it easy on the opponents. Psyche had a great impact on the results - if you persisted, you won.

The athletes however their discipline will get new contacts, make new friends, be able to talk peer-to-peer and get a new perspective on life.

There will be a book launch during the Opening Ceremony.

7th European Youth Games for the Disabled started this evening at the VUT stadium Pod Palackého vrchem. "We want to provide the participants with an unforgettable experience. Many famous persons and our ambassadors will come to support the athletes," emphasized the Organising Committee President Pavel Zbožínek.

As the organizers have pointed out, the public will have an insight into sport activities of people with disabilities in order to remove prejudice and barriers.

„Emil Open makes sense. Disabled athletes, whether they swim or bike, are always role models to their mates who are going through a difficult time. Thanks to them they see how they can grow,“ said the city mayor Petr Vokřál.

June is round the corner and being one of the warm months it tempts us to do sport. The fact that one can do sport despite any limitations will be proved by young athletes during the European Youth Games for the Disabled.

Also Slovak athletes will participate this year. Our patient Tomáš Zajíc from Bratislava will do his best in swimming - backstroke, front crawl.

This year the organisers increased the number of adaptive sports: athletics, swimming, table tennis, golf, boccia, bocce.  „ Bocce is played on a grassy area and is very similar to French pétanque. "We do believe it will attract people," says Zbožínek.

The cooperation has expanded to Slovakia. A Slovak representative will be an ambassador for the first time. A successful paralympic medallist Samuel Andrejčík has joined the two Czech ambassadors, Arnošt Petráček and Jiří Ježek.
